Five a side football, the first of the year's inter-stable/stud competitions attracted twenty-four teams, and was played over three evenings at the Newmarket Leisure Centre. It was necessary, because of the modernisation work at the Leisure Centre, to play the tournament outdoors for the first time since 1978 and whilst the larger pitch made for more open play, it also resulted in fewer goals being scored than normal. The finals night, concluded with a first ever win for P Chapple-Hyam ladies over Fanshawe's ladies who repeated their runner-up position of 2007, whilst men's victors Darley Stud regained the title they lost last year by triumphing over a Clive Brittain team appearing in the event after a few years absence. Teams: P Chapple-Hyam - Lizzie Cairns, Danny Deverson, Aoife Keane, Jodie Pledge, Jamie Wood, Darley Stud - Dave Cahill, Ken Crozier, Dan Halford, Darren Palmer, Michael Palmer and Martin Redmond. Darley Captain Ken Crozier was delighted. He has been playing in the competition since 1985 and in that time been a winning team member on half a dozen occasions. |
