FOOTBALL

Inter-stable/stub Football Competition

Five a side football, the first of the year's inter-stable/stud competitions attracted twenty-four teams, and was played over three evenings at the Newmarket Leisure Centre. It was necessary, because of the modernisation work at the Leisure Centre, to play the tournament outdoors for the first time since 1978 and whilst the larger pitch made for more open play, it also resulted in fewer goals being scored than normal.

The finals night, concluded with a first ever win for P Chapple-Hyam ladies over Fanshawe's ladies who repeated their runner-up position of 2007, whilst men's victors Darley Stud regained the title they lost last year by triumphing over a Clive Brittain team appearing in the event after a few years absence.

Teams: P Chapple-Hyam - Lizzie Cairns, Danny Deverson, Aoife Keane, Jodie Pledge, Jamie Wood, Darley Stud - Dave Cahill, Ken Crozier, Dan Halford, Darren Palmer, Michael Palmer and Martin Redmond.

Darley Captain Ken Crozier was delighted. He has been playing in the competition since 1985 and in that time been a winning team member on half a dozen occasions.

International Five A Side Competition

The second New Astley Club international 5 a side tournament took place on Sunday 21st September at Newmarket Leisure Centre. The competition which had funding from the West Anglia Sports Partnership and the New Astley club aims to encourage foreign workers in stables and studs to come together on a friendly basis.
The league based competition was hotly contested by seven teams of various natiuonalities with the winning team from Poland, the runners up were England, and Brazil coming in third.
The winning team were:Lukasz Felinski, Pawel Czarnecki, Pawel Gogolewski, Gregor Golecki, Gregor Rynjak, Artur Bartyzel, Artur Dul, Martin Kopecki.

Club Presentation Night

The annual New Astley Presentation went ahead on Saturday 25th October.
An excellent evening with over 100 people present being presented by various stables and studs. The evening was also in conjunction with the Breeders Cup, which was shown on TV's around the hall, which of course Newmarket stables did so well at, made this evening a great success.
Awards were given out to the winners and runners up from the various sporting activities that had taken place over the last year.
